Where are we...

Chilli Festival 2010

A very busy Chilli Festival at Sawtell this year.

On the roundabout at the Sawtell Chilli Festival

We had a lot of visitors holidaying for the weekend (I wonder if this article encouraged them?) as well as the usual locals dropping by for a fun day out. I cycled down to the main street with my family. The winter sunshine was beautiful.

Piney Fresh

We have just had a lovely stretch of warm spring weather here in Sawtell. Sawtell Golf Club has started to dry out and The Coffs Dinghy Sailing Club has started to get active so I've been out sailing around with my boys. The water last Sunday was clear as a bell, beautiful.

The dry weather came to an end finally and we had a fabulous lightning storm late on Sunday night followed by lashings of rain. Everyones water tanks got filled and the beaches washed down. Now everything is fresh and cool...

Please tell me if I'm starting to sound like an armpit deodorant advertisement.

Cheers, Ruben :)

Storming into 2008

We've had some mad surf along the coast since the New Year. The waves are thrashing about in a completely useless way. I have recently started paddling with the local Coffs Harbour Outrigger Canoe Club, and it has been a bit of a non-event for the past few days. Not that I have been to keen to go out in the lashing horizontal rain.

My kids however have been loving it, they have spent the past few days sliding around puddles on a boogie board, having mud fights. water fights, just generally getting very wet and very muddy.

I only seem to update this website when it is raining... which goes to show just how sunny Sawtell is!

Sunny Sawtell

Surfboards are so efficient at sandpapering bellies!
Yesterday I pinched my son's Gromit softboard (thanks Sunpatch) and tried to catch some waves off Murrays Beach. They were great waves. Huge smooth and wavy.

You may be guessing by his stage that I am not really much of a surfer. I am really bad at surfing. I wish I could actually stand up. Maybe I should go pay Lee Winkler to show me how to do it.

After a while I gave up trying to surf on the board, chucked it on the beach and just body surfed instead. It occurred to me that, although I love body boarding, it reminds me of when I was a kid and the local doctor syringed my ears to clean out the excess wax, flies and chewing gum. That dull roaring in the ears as the force of that wave pulls you in. Its great. Really.

Love Winter

Winter is great.

I went to the renewables fair at Valla last week, afterwards we took the kids down to the beach for a picnic. We had the beach mostly to ourselves and poked around in the colourful little rockpools. Nicoles' little boy Jimmy (age 3) ran straight into the creek. It was him who inspired Evan and I to go for a swim.

It was one of those clear cold day's with warm sunshine and the water was perfect. I could see right through the oncoming waves, sometimes catching a glimpse of a small fish or two suspended in front of me.

Beautiful.

Rainy Sawtell

It has been pouring with rain all day. So I squashed some of my friend, Julie's, delicious Cherry Tomatoes into the herb patch. Hopefully we'll have a big bush of them before summer.

The backyard is fully soaked, the frogs have been busy, our pond is full of tadpoles. They are accompanied by about five blue-eyes who are hopefully tucking into the mozzie larvae. I expect if we get a few more rainy days the frogs will really start making a fabulous racket. A few months ago we had a skinny little frog who liked to hide behind the back door and do his "CRO--AK..yup I'm over here girls...CR--OAK". The door was an excellent amplifier and it sounded like he was as big as a Cane Toad. Oh dear... it just occurred to me that those are probably his offspring in the pond.

Wireless Internet

You'll be glad to know that the wireless internet has been up and running for a while now. So if you are already staying at one of the apartments or planning a visit, crank up your computer and connect to the 'sawtellbeach' wi-fi!

More wi-fi news...

First of all an apology, I rather brilliantly had the contact page secured against anyone using it. Sorry to the 5 people this week who tried to use it - I'm a dill.

Having decided to go for the abysmally fastest ADSL available in Sawtell (1500/256 to us nerds), I needed a phone line. This involved chasing my tail for a few weeks trying to figure out who was responsible and who'd be paying etc. I think it is starting to move now, I have a phone engineer fixing up the phone line, once he is done I just need to get Telstra to connect the line.... urg.

Meanwhile I'm trying to figure out my final choice on the hardware to connect everyone up....

...watch this space.
